ONE DAY WORKSHOP ON ENERGY MANAGEMENT
16 December 2008
Introduction
Energy is the prime mover of industrial growth and the percentage share of energy in production cost typically varies from 5% to 37% depending upon the type of industry. In the present context of impending energy crises and increase in per unit cost of electricity, Energy Conservation plays an important role in cutting down production cost of industries enabling them to become more competitive in the global market. The conservation potential in industries varies from 5% to 30% (or even more) depending upon the type of industry and manufacturing processes used.
Looking at the prevailing power scenario in India of 14% peak power shortage and 9% energy shortage, Govt. of India has enacted Energy Conservation Act-2001 and established Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) in the year 2002. The thrust areas of BEE include energy efficiency in industrial sector, demand side management, standards and labeling, energy conservation building codes, etc. Govt. of Gujarat has also made energy audit mandatory for industrial units having contract demand of 200 kVA and more.
ERDA is one of the leading recognized consultants for undertaking Energy Audit under Energy Conservation Act 2001. So far ERDA has completed energy audit in more than 220 units and the list of major process plant clients include; Tata Steel, Jindal Steel and Power Ltd., ESSAR Steel, General Motors, ONGC, IPCL, GSFC, GNFC, GACL, GAIL, DPCL, KRIBHCO, etc.
Similarly, ERDA is one of the leading energy auditors in the country for power plants (thermal, nuclear & hydro) having conducted energy audit in more than 80 generating units of rating ranging from 30 MW to 500 MW.
The list of major utilities whose power plants have been audited include M/s NTPC, MAHAGENCO, Maharashtra, NPCIL, GSECL, Gujarat, MPPGCL, Madhya Pradesh, Torrent Power, Ahmedabad, etc.
Savings potential of up to 64% & 43% has been identified for Electrical and Thermal energy, respectively. Also 11% to 100% of the savings identified were without any investment and only by modifications and also without affecting the manufacturing process. The outcome of the energy audit work is equivalent to power saving (negaWatts) of 50 MW and equivalent monetary saving of Rs. 163 Crores.
ERDA is approved as an Energy Auditor by a number of agencies including Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), New Delhi (under Energy Conservation Act-2001); Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA), New Delhi; Gujarat Energy Development Agency (GEDA), Gujarat; Maharashtra Energy Development Agency (MEDA), Maharashtra; Energy Management Centre (EMC), Kerala; Chhattishgarh State Renewable Energy Development Agency (CREDA), Chhattishgarh & Commissioner of Electricity, Govt. of Gujarat.
In recognition of the work done in the area of Energy Conservation, PCRA, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has awarded ERDA “Best Improvement in Performance Award” for three consecutive years & “Best Energy Auditor Award” for two consecutive years. Moreover MEDA, Maharashtra has also appreciated the outstanding work done by ERDA in the area of energy conservation and awarded special “Certificate of Appreciation” for two consecutive years.
In light of this background, ERDA is organizing a one day Workshop on “Energy Management” on 16th December 2008 to impart knowledge on methodology of energy audit, performance evaluation of electrical and thermal equipment, case studies, etc.
Workshop Content
The content of the workshop will be drawn from the following topics:
