Temperature is a key parameter to analyze health of any equipment as it is directly related to losses of any system/equipment. Continuous temperature measurement of live busbar helps user to know the loading condition of busbar. Owing to accessibility restrictions and limitations of taking readings using wired temperature sensor or infrared sensor, temperature measurement of live electric panel busbar is sometimes difficult. In addition to this, to measure the temperature of panel/cabin/busbars of electric panels, one might need to open the panel doors which is not possible during live panels. Also wired temperature sensor on live busbar are prone to create fault due to wear and tear of wires by ageing. Looking into the demerits of wired temperature sensor, ERDA has developed technological solution and prototype of self-powered wireless thermal sensor. The technological solution for self-powered wireless thermal sensor for temperature measurement application can be useful for maintenance and operation purpose and also for diagnostic team.
The developed Wireless Thermal sensor generates power from thermal losses of the busbar and uses generated power to sense and transmit the temperature readings. This sensor works on Seebeck Effect i.e. it generates power from temperature difference of panel busbar and panel ambient temperature. Self-powered Wireless Thermal sensor is retro fit plug and play type of device which can be mounted on live busbars for LV application. WT sensor stands advantageous in cases like decision making for busbar loading and fault prediction from the previously recorded temperature data.
